Student social housing

Proposed by Mon Logement Étudiant Updated on il y a 21 jours

Students have the option of applying for accommodation in several types of residences:

  • Subsidized or socially-oriented university residences (Crous residences, social landlords, associations) offer moderate rents (cheaper than standard rents) and often prioritize scholarship students.
  • Student residences with services, offered by private operators, generally have higher rents.

To help students find accommodation, the Mon Logement Étudiant website brings together offers of social housing and allows you to see available accommodation throughout France.
Students who have a Crous scholarship can also look for accommodation with the Crous.

Everything is explained on the Refugees.info page "Crous student accommodation".

It is also possible to rent independent accommodation (from a private individual or through a real estate agency), or a room in a home occupied by a private individual (family or elderly person). You should visit specialized websites or contact agencies or associations directly.

How to do it?

To apply for student social housing, you must:

  • be legally residing in France
  • be a student (already enrolled or in the process of enrolling at university, or in a higher education institution, or in a post-baccalaureate program)
  • have limited resources (financial aid, no salary or a low salary)
  • have a bank account in your name
  • have a guarantor (a person who agrees to pay the rent on your behalf if you cannot pay) or use the Visale guarantee.

Read the information sheet on Refugees.infos " Applying for the Visale guarantee ".

Some residences have additional criteria: for example, age, distance between your current home and the place of your studies, family situation….

The required documents are:

  • a valid identity document: residence permit, receipt…
  • a document that proves you are enrolled or accepted at university, or in a higher education institution, or in a post-baccalaureate course (student card, registration file, etc.)
  • proof of your financial resources (a scholarship award letter or notification of financial aid, payslips, etc.)
  • a bank account statement (RIB)
  • your guarantor's documents (identity document, payslips) or a Visale guarantee certificate.

Read the information sheet on Refugees.infos " Applying for the Visale guarantee ".

Depending on your situation and the accommodation requested, you may sometimes need to send other documents.

It is necessary to have these documents in digital format on your phone or computer (as PDF or photo).

Read the information sheet on Refugees.info " Scanning a document ".

1. Go to the Mon Logement Étudiant website

You have the option to create an account to add residences to your favorites and receive housing alerts.
But you can also use the site directly.

2. Click on "Find accommodation" and then enter the city where you are studying.

or the nearest large city, or the department.

3. Move the button to your maximum budget

How much can you pay per month in total for rent and utilities?

Rents with "CC" include charges: you pay only once for the rent and certain charges (cleaning of common areas, cold and hot water, sometimes electricity, etc.). It is important to check the total carefully.

To accurately calculate your budget, you can use the simulator (found in the offers or on this page ): fill in the information about your situation and your search. The site will provide estimates to give you an idea.

To understand the available assistance and how to apply, read the fact sheet on Refugees.info " Applying for housing assistance ".

4. Choose the type of accommodation

Shared accommodation is shared with other students (individual bedroom, shared living room and kitchen).

Accessible housing for people with reduced mobility (PRM) is adapted for people with disabilities, for example wheelchair users.

5. Look at available accommodations on a list or map

For each offer, there are photos, a list of amenities (furniture, services…) and the address.

Studio: one room + kitchenette + bathroom and toilet.
T1: one room (living room and bedroom together) + a separate kitchen + bathroom and toilet.
T2, T3 ...: a living room + a bedroom + a separate kitchen + bathroom and toilet (each number is an additional bedroom).
Kitchenette: a small kitchen.
Furnished accommodation: equipped for immediate occupancy (a bed, a hob, a fridge…), generally higher rents, one-year rental contract.
Unfurnished accommodation: no furniture, sometimes a hob and a fridge, longer rental contract (3 years).
If you cannot find an offer in the chosen city, or if there are not many accommodations, you can click on "Alert" to receive an email when accommodations become available.

6. Click on "view offer" to get information about the accommodation directly on the manager's website

The Mon Logement Étudiant website does not rent accommodation directly; it presents offers and then redirects to the website of the manager (the residence, the landlord, the association, etc.).

7. Submit your application on the administrator's website and send your documents.

Depending on the manager, it may sometimes be necessary to complete a form, send a request email, or create an account.

You can make multiple requests in the same city, to several different managers.

What happens next?

Each manager has a different organizational structure.

If you have created an account on the manager's website, log in regularly to check for messages.

In any case, check your emails regularly.

Sometimes you have to send additional documents, confirm a response before a fixed date, pay booking fees…

Once you have found accommodation, don't forget to cancel the other applications.
You also need to have home insurance before signing the rental agreement.

The Mon Logement Étudiant website also includes:

  • tips for calculating and preparing your budget
  • Practical information on the main student cities in France (at the bottom of the homepage).

Further information on planning expenses and avoiding difficult situations can be found on the Refugees.info fact sheet " Managing a housing budget ".
