Become a medical assistant

Proposed by JRS France Updated on il y a 20 jours

The job of a medical assistant allows you to work alongside a doctor and discover the French healthcare system.
It could be a solution for healthcare professionals with qualifications outside the EU who wish to work during their studies to resume their profession in France.

The medical assistant works alongside a doctor, particularly in a medical practice or health center.

They participate in welcoming patients, organizing the care pathway, and certain administrative tasks. They may also assist the doctor during consultations for certain procedures.

To work as a medical assistant, you need appropriate professional qualifications. The standard training is preparation for the Professional Qualification Certificate (CQP) for Medical Assistants.

It is also possible to practice with some French state-recognized healthcare professional diplomas. including the state diploma for nurses, nursing assistants or childcare assistants.

A medical, nursing or other healthcare professional diploma obtained outside the European Union does not allow one to practice directly as a medical assistant.
However, this diploma can help you convince an employer to hire you.

The CQP training lasts 279 hours , spread over a period of 10 to 12 months and is done in alternation.

There is no national level of French explicitly required by regulations to access the CQP Medical Assistant.

A very good level of French is required to work with patients, communicate with doctors, and participate in the training. A B2 level is recommended, particularly for spoken French.

How to do it?

If you obtained your secondary school diploma abroad, it is recommended to have a comparability statement with the ENIC-NARIC France centre even if it is not always required.

This certificate allows you to prove you have completed level 4 of secondary education.

Read the Refugees.info fact sheet: " Getting a foreign diploma recognized in France (ENIC-NARIC) "

Indeed, the application is free for refugees, beneficiaries of subsidiary protection, and asylum seekers. Please note that the response can take up to 4 months.

Prepare in particular:

  • your high school diploma and the ENIC-NARIC comparability statement;
  • your higher education diplomas;
  • your transcripts, if you have them;
  • your CV;
  • documents about your professional experience;
  • a cover letter;
  • an identity document (residence permit, passport...);
  • as soon as possible: a letter of commitment or recommendation from the doctor who agrees to take you in a job-study program;
  • French translations of the requested documents.
