Where is it?

Working quickly in the medical-social sector

Updated on 5 months ago

What is it?

This information sheet applies to refugees who hold a paramedical diploma issued by a country outside the European Union (EU).

Entering certain paramedical professions can take time (3 or 4 years for a nurse, as you have to start all over again from the first year of study). In the meantime, it is possible to enter certain medical and social professions quickly.

There are two types of jobs:

  • Jobs that are immediately accessible without training (or training lasting a few hours): hospital service agent, stretcher-bearer, ambulance assistant. While working, it is possible to do a validation of acquired experience (VAE) to obtain a diploma with a view to working as a nursing assistant, home help or childcare assistant.
  • Jobs accessible following short training: childcare assistant , social care assistant , or nursing assistant. It is possible not to have to do the training if you obtain the diploma through VAE.
Almost all paramedical training courses require obtaining the Level 2 Emergency Care and Procedures Training Certificate (AFGSU2).
For those who have one of the four medical degrees (doctor, pharmacist, midwife or dental surgeon), it is possible to follow short or accelerated training courses more suited to working quickly:
- There is accelerated training for doctors and midwives to work as nurses .
- Dentists can take accelerated training to work as a dental assistant .
- Pharmacists can work in clinical research.

How to do it?

The hospital service agent works in hospitals, clinics and nursing homes. The work mainly consists of maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene of premises and equipment, such as patient rooms, bathrooms and kitchens. They also ensure the disinfection and decontamination of operating rooms. Hospital service agents can also help nursing staff and patients with mobility, distribute meals and manage stocks of care equipment.

The job of hospital service agent is accessible without any particular diploma, and is therefore open to everyone.

You can apply directly to nursing homes (EHPADs), hospitals, clinics, or on recruitment platforms (Pôle emploi, Indeed, etc.).

After having worked for 3 months as an ASH, it is possible to progress to the profession of ASH acting as a nursing assistant.

It is necessary to complete 70 hours of training (10 days), often within the same establishment, and to have 6 months of professional experience.

The stretcher-bearer transports patients to the various departments of a hospital establishment, they must ensure the safety of the patient and must therefore be able to provide first aid. They are also responsible for transferring the patient's medical file, transporting analyses and disinfecting his equipment.

The job of stretcher-bearer is accessible without any particular diploma, so it is open to everyone.

A certificate of training in level 2 emergency procedures and care (AFGSU2) is essential (short training courses offered by the Red Cross , Afpa, etc.).
After a few years of experience and additional training, a stretcher-bearer can become a nursing assistant, childcare assistant, ambulance assistant or paramedic.

The ambulance assistant assists the ambulance driver in transporting patients to hospitals. They must ensure the safety and comfort of patients and must be able to perform first aid care. The ambulance assistant is also responsible for sterilizing medical equipment and maintaining the vehicle.

This profession is easily accessible with a short training course of 91 hours (including 21 hours for the AFGSU2 first aid training), provided by the ambulance training institutes (IFA).

After your training, you can apply directly to hospitals, clinics, retirement homes, or on recruitment platforms (Pôle emploi, Indeed, etc.).

Obtaining the AFGSU2 is mandatory and the future ambulance auxiliary must have had a B license for at least 3 years.
The ambulance assistant can become an ambulance driver by passing the state diploma. They benefit from exemptions:
- Exemption from the 140-hour discovery internship if they have worked for at least one month continuously.
- Exemption from the oral admission test if they have worked continuously for at least one year full-time.

What happens next?

While you work in the medical-social sector, you can do a validation of acquired experience (VAE) to obtain the diploma to work as a nursing assistant, home help or childcare assistant.

You will need to be able to prove that you have at least one year of personal experience in the field.

You can thus transform past professional experiences in your home country into a diploma recognized in France. This is a process that can take several months, sometimes a year depending on your availability and the difficulties encountered.

To find out if VAE is well suited to your path and to be supported throughout the process, it is preferable to benefit from personalized monitoring with “ Experience without Borders ” which supports refugees with experiences acquired abroad.

Following the VAE, you can obtain, depending on your experience, one of the following diplomas:

  • State Diploma of Nursing Assistant (Bac +1)
  • State Diploma of Childcare Assistant (Bac+1)
  • State Diploma in Educational and Social Support (DEAES) (Bac+1) to be a home helper.

You will then be able to work in these areas.

If you cannot obtain these diplomas through VAE, you will have to do the corresponding training (See nursing assistant file ; childcare assistant and life assistant files ).
