Learn French at university in Paris (5th arrondissement)

With DU FLE (French as a Foreign Language) Sorbonne Alliance - Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University

The DU FLE Sorbonne Alliance is a Passerelle University Diploma which allows asylum seekers, beneficiaries of subsidiary or temporary protection, refugees and stateless people, to have a better level of French in order to study in France.

This DU FLE SA (French as a Foreign Language Sorbonne Alliance) training of approximately 450 hours offers:

  • French courses,
  • Cultural activities,
  • Support in building your academic and career plans in France.
The training lasts two semesters (9 months), from September to December then from January to May.

There are around 40 similar training courses in France. This sheet presents the training at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.

Why is it interesting?

In the DU FLE SA program at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, there are approximately 450 hours of French classes from September to May, including:
- 17.5 hours of classes per week
- 40 hours of TCF and DELF preparation courses (January and May).

French classes take place from 9:00 a.m.to 12:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, at one of the university's centers in Paris. Attendance is mandatory.

You will take exams throughout the year to obtain a Passerelle University Diploma and the official DELF/TCF exam at the end of the course in May (funded by the university).

If you are a beneficiary of international protection or a beneficiary of temporary protection and are under 35 years of age, you have the possibility of applying for financial assistance (scholarships based on social criteria or specific annual aid) every month and accommodation to do the training.

During the course, you will discover university in France: what it is like to be a student, how courses and exams are organized, what diplomas and courses are available, learn how to take notes during classes and how to study outside of lectures, make presentations, prepare for exams.

Each student has a student card which give them access:
- to the libraries of the University of Paris 1
- to the university health department
- to the university sports department
- to the university information and orientation department
- to the culture department.

The French higher education system is complex.

During the training, professionals individually support each student to reflect on their academic and professional project, according to their possibilities.

Professionals also help you write your CV and cover letters, and register for the training courses that interest you:

  • group and individual workshops and drop-in sessions organized by the UniR (Universities and Refugees) association through a partnership between UniR and the University of Paris 1.
  • meeting with students to compile a file and help them to join a Bachelor's or Master's degree at Paris 1 University (or another) after the University Diploma.

In addition to French lessons, you will be able to take part in different activities during the training:

  • drama classes (2 hours per week);
  • cultural outings (museums, cinema, end-of-year school trip);
  • sports activities with the sports department.
