Become a medical radiology technologist

Medical radiology technicians perform imaging exams (CT scans, X-rays, ultrasounds). They assist in diagnosis and also use radiation therapy to treat certain diseases, such as cancer.

To work as a medical radiology technician, you must hold a French state-certified diploma in this field. The training program lasts 3 years.

Holders of a diploma in radiologic technology obtained outside the European Union may have a partial exemption from schooling after passing selection tests (decree of 14 June 2012 relating to the state diploma of medical radiologic technology technician).

How to do it?

Start by registering for the entrance exam to gain admission to the program with partial credit. This exam is open to individuals who hold a foreign degree in medical radiography.

The competition tests are similar throughout France, the competition costs approximately €141.

You must hold a high school diploma. You can use this form to submit a comparability application for your diploma .

To apply for the selection tests, candidates must send an application file to the medical radiographer training institute of their choice, including:

1. A photocopy of their residence permit valid for the entire period of the training

2. A photocopy of their diploma as a medical radiographer or equivalent qualification

3. (Not for refugees) A detailed record of the course of study completed, specifying the number of hours of instruction per subject and per year of training, the content and number of hours of each clinical placement completed during the training in the various fields of practice of the medical radiographer profession, as well as the continuous assessment record, all issued and certified by a competent official authority of the country that issued the diploma

4. For candidates with prior professional experience, any certificate related to the practice of the profession of medical radiographer

5. The translation into French by a translator accredited to the French courts of all the documents referred to in points 1, 2, 3 and 4.

6. A curriculum vitae (CV)

7. A cover letter.

This competition includes:

1. A written eligibility test

  • A general knowledge test with 5 questions.
  • It assesses proficiency in French and knowledge in the health and social field.
  • Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Score out of 20
  • You need to get at least 10/20 to be eligible.

2. Two admission tests

Interview in French

  • Discussion on the candidate's professional background and motivations based on the application file.
  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Score out of 20
  • A score below 10/20 is a failure.

Practical application

  • Study of a clinical case and performance of two care procedures.
  • This test assesses knowledge, analysis of a care situation, as well as technical and interpersonal skills.
  • Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes (including 30 minutes of preparation)
  • Score out of 20
  • A score below 10/20 is a failure.

Admission

To be admitted, you must obtain a minimum of 30 points out of 60 in total across the three tests.

Training funded by the region

The training can be funded by the Region, particularly for certain groups such as RSA beneficiaries or job seekers, according to the rules specific to each region.

Regional funding is usually paid directly to the training provider. To find out if you are eligible for this funding, it is important to contact the training institute directly.

France Travail support

In certain situations, France Travail may provide various forms of support for people who have worked and paid contributions for at least six months. The schemes and amounts may vary by region.

Costs to expect

Even when the training is funded, some costs may still be your responsibility:

  • University registration fees
  • CVEC (Student and Campus Life Contribution): €105 (2025). Refugees are exempt from this fee. Some universities also offer tuition fee waivers.
