Take the morning-after pill (emergency contraception)

Proposed by Réfugiés.info Updated on il y a 20 jours

The morning-after pill is an emergency contraceptive to prevent pregnancy.

This is a medication you can take if you have had unprotected or inadequately protected sex. For example:

  • absence of a condom,
  • breakage or removal of the condom,
  • forgetting to take the contraceptive pill,
  • vomiting and diarrhea after taking the contraceptive pill.
The morning-after pill is emergency contraception only. It is not intended for daily use, but can be taken several times throughout a lifetime or within a year without risk.
Emergency contraception does not cause sterility: it has no negative impact on fertility.

Warning: the morning-after pill does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

How to do it?

You can request the morning-after pill:

If you are under 18, you can also request the morning-after pill free of charge and anonymously (you keep it secret).
You can find them in the same places, or at the infirmary of your middle or high school.

The morning-after pill is free . You don't need a doctor's prescription. You simply need to present:

  • your health insurance card
  • or your certificate of rights
  • or your AME card (state medical aid).
Even without a health insurance card or AME, you can get a free morning-after pill at a sexual health center or screening center.

You should take the pill as soon as possible after unprotected sex. The sooner you take the medication, the more effective it is.

The maximum number of days depends on the medication:

  • 3 days for the levonorgestrel pill (for example Norlevo® )
  • 5 days for the pill containing ulipristal acetate (for example EllaOne® )
After taking the medication, you may experience light bleeding, nausea, or a change in your period. These side effects usually disappear quickly.

Warning: If vomiting or severe diarrhea occurs within three hours of taking the morning-after pill, you must take another pill.

What happens next?

The morning-after pill does not always work, especially if you take it several days after sexual intercourse.

To be sure you are not pregnant, you can take a pregnancy test.

You can take the test:

  • starting from the first day of a missed period ,
  • or at least 14 days after sexual intercourse .

Taking a test too early can give a false negative result.
