Make an appointment with a social worker

A social worker supports people who have difficulties with papers, housing, money, health, professional or psychological issues.

They can give you advice, help you with administrative procedures or requests for financial aid and direct you to services based on your needs.

For example, a social worker can help you:
- apply for social housing
- apply for and renew a residence permit
- register for a French course or professional training
- find a doctor and make an appointment
- apply for RSA or family allowances from the CAF
- update your France Travail situation (formerly Pôle Emploi)
- manage your budget
- understand your children's schooling
- find solutions in the event of a disability situation…

You can find a social worker in different places:

  • at the Social Action Center (CCAS ) of your town hall
  • to the Departmental Council  
  • to the Family Allowance Fund (CAF) closest to you for financial assistance and family
  • but also at the Primary Health Insurance Fund (CPAM ) , in health centers, medico-social centers for medical care, psychological assistance and health in general
  • the Departmental House for Disabled People (MDPH) for assistance and documents relating to disability situations
  • Local missions for the search for work and training of young people between 16 and 25 years old...

How to do it?

  • For the CCAS, on this site: on the line Who? / What? write Town Hall , and on the line Where? write your postal code.
    Click on the link to your city's town hall to get the address and telephone number.
  • For the Departmental Council, on this site: on the line Who? / What?, write Departmental Council and on the line Where? the name or number of your department.
    Click on the link for your Departmental Council to get the address and telephone number.
  • For the CAF, on this site: go to the top right on My CAF and enter your postal code then click on validate .
    You arrive on the CAF page for your department. They are all different.
    Usually you can click on contact us or reception points to get the address and phone number.

You can call or go directly to the town hall, the Departmental Council or the CAF to make an appointment with a social worker.

Even if it is difficult for you to communicate in French, the social worker is there to support you.
Do not hesitate to explain your problem clearly so that you can be directed to the appropriate department.

What happens next?

Once you have decided on a date and time with the case worker, you will need to go to your appointment. You can then explain to him/her the problems you are facing.

Do not forget to gather the documents relating to your request: proof of address to verify the sectorization, the last three payslips, tax, the various invoices, etc.

The social worker may ask you for them at the start of the appointment.

During your interview, the assistant will carry out a complete and personalized diagnosis of your situation . He/she will then be able to assist you in your efforts and advise you in order to offer you appropriate services and find solutions to your difficulties.
