Request a travel document

The travel document for foreigners (TVE) is a document which allows protected persons in France (refugees, subsidiary protected persons, stateless persons) and their children to travel abroad.
There are several types of travel documents:
- TVR: refugee travel document
- TIV: identity and travel document for subsidiary protected persons
- VAT : travel document for stateless persons .
A travel document allows you to travel to many countries outside the Schengen Area. Depending on the country visited, a visa may be required.
The travel document does not authorize you to return to your home country. Otherwise, you risk losing your status and the protection granted by France.

You can return to France with your travel document only, if it is still valid (except for the VAT which must be accompanied, for adults, by the residence permit).
The travel document is issued by the prefecture and is valid:
- 4 years if you have a multi-year residence permit card (4 years)
- 5 years if you have a resident card (10 years)
- 1 year if issued to the child of a refugee, subsidiary protected person or stateless person.
It is recommended that you plan your future trips and make your request at least 3 months before your departure.
If you have recently moved or changed your address, you must first notify the change of situation on the ANEF before applying for your travel document.
