Becoming a tenured lecturer-researcher in higher education

JRS FranceProposed by JRS France Updated on il y a un mois

There are several types of positions in higher education:

The holders are either lecturers (MCF) or university professors (PU).

All of them teach and do research. However, university professors (PU) have more experience and responsibilities.

You must have a very good level of French (B2 minimum) to be granted tenure, but it is not mandatory to be French.

How to do it?

For lecturer (MCF)

It's necessary having:

  • A Doctorate (PhD)
  • A high-quality thesis and publications
  • Teaching experience (often 64 hours minimum)
  • A good level of French (and sometimes English): B2 minimum
The application file should include a description of the applicant's teaching, research, administrative duties, or other shared responsibilities. The applicant should also include three copies of his works, such as articles, books, or other publications.

For university professors (PU)

It's necessary having:

  • An experience in supervising theses
  • Regular and recent publications
  • An experience in the participation in conferences and research projects
  • Responsibilities in a laboratory or team
  • A qualification to direct research (HDR) or an equivalent proof (depending on your status abroad).
    Everything is explained here .
People who have the title of professor (according to the equivalence grid available on the Galaxie website see this list ) are considered to have the same status as university professors and therefore as having the equivalence of HDR.
Researchers who are not on this list can also obtain this equivalence if they have supervised at least three doctoral students who have assisted their thesis.

You must send your file to the National Council of Universities (CNU) via the Galaxie website.

If your application is accepted, you obtain the "qualification", valid for 4 years.

Exceptions:

  • If you have recently held an equivalent lecturer position abroad, you are exempt from the qualification
  • Private establishments do not necessarily require this qualification.

Once qualified, you can apply for positions offers on the Galaxie website.

Each university forms a committee which:

  • Analyzes the files
  • Schedules interviews
  • Ranks the candidates.
Please note, the selection is very competitive.

What happens next?

If you are selected , you will start with a year of internship.

Then you will become a holder.

You will then be able to teach, do research and develop a stable career, with job security and benefits (retirement, progression, etc.).

Even if you are qualified, you may not get a job right away because of how difficult the selection process is. In the meantime, you can:
