Renouncing refugee status

In short
Last update22 avr. 2021

What is it?

If you are have been granted refugee status, you can renounce it any time. You have to make this request to the French Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons (OFPRA).

Please note : Renouncing refugee status is a definitive decision that can have serious consequences for you and your family.

You can renounce refugee status if:

  • The fears you expressed when you asked for asylum in France no longer exist;
  • You can travel to your home country without any risk.

Exception: if a minor child is under international protection because of a threat of genital mutilation, they cannot renounce refugee status as long as this threat exists.
